Workshop: Bakelite Ring Making / Saturday, March 3 / 100 Pier 4

Workshop: Bakelite Ring Making / Saturday, March 3 / 100 Pier 4

This class will be about upcycling old Bakelite into finished, wearable jewelry—most likely in the form of a ring. Students will cut, file, sand, and polish found Bakelite and gain a kinesthetic understanding of what the tolerances of this material are. In addition to this, workshop will cover the historical context of this material in the form of a short lecture, as it is a very important plastic. Instructor will discuss how to identify and buy real Bakelite.

Artist Talk + Demo: Lily Fein / Friday, March 9 / @ 100 Pier 4

Artist Talk + Demo: Lily Fein / Friday, March 9 / @ 100 Pier 4

Join Society of Arts + Crafts' Artist in Residence Lily Fein for a talk and demo of her ceramic work. Lily works in porcelain clay with a coil-and-pinch method to create undulating and ethereal vessels. Her technique lends movement and lightness to her ceramics and inspires us to think about body and touch. Lily will be speaking about and demonstrating her work in the Artist in Residency Studio at the Society of Arts + Crafts. Her demo will offer a unique opportunity to connect with the process that is so essential to the work’s impact. Lily is from Newton, Massachusetts.

Explore mosaic arts with Pam Stratton (Rockport, MA) as she demonstrates process and technique at the Society of Arts and Crafts. She will be in the Galleries from 11 am to 4 pm working on a project to show us the many materials and techniques of mosaics. Pam will be with us for the day, come as you wish. Ask questions, be nosy, and see a work-in-process. This program is held in conjunction with the exhibition Mosaic Arts International 2018 - Sophie Drouin, which is free and open to the public.
