New York City-based artist Rebecca Welz works in steel that she forms using an oxy-acetylene torch, transforming hard, straight stock into curvilinear drawings in space. She draws inspiration from Japanese design and aesthetics, as well as her experiences of scuba diving in clear, turquoise water. Sculptures, wall pieces and more will be on view in the Spotlight Gallery at the Society of Arts + Crafts from February 21 to May 5, 2019.

Welz currently works as a professor at the Pratt Institute where her teaching and research has led her to focus on biomimicry, the science of studying how nature works, and applying it to human design, and how that connects with the environment and sustainability. Welz' work is included in numerous public and private collections, and has been written about in ArtNews, Sculpture Magazine, Arts Magazine, the Christian Science Monitor and numerous other publications.
